Cool down with som hot flicks

On those hot, sticky summer days, sometimes there’s nothing better than chillin’ in an air-conditioned theater. Here’s a brief list of some of this summer’s offerings. For a more complete list, click here.

“Spider-Man” – Opens Friday. The classic superhero story of Marvel Comics fame, starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe. Maguire is Spider-Man, who becomes so after a bite from a radioactive spider transforms him from a wiry dork to a slinky-suited, super-powered stud. (Columbia Tristar, PG-13)

“Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” – Opens May 16. Let the promotion-flurry … er … continue. Starring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson and Ian McDiarmid. Continuing 10 years after the events of “The Phantom Menace,” Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor), Padmé Amidala (Portman) and Anakin Skywalker (Christensen) are together again, facing choices that will affect their fates and the destiny of the Republic. (Twentieth Century Fox, not yet rated)

“Insomnia” – Opens May 24. Starring Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and Robin Williams. The convoluted story of a sleep-deprived detective (Pacino) investigating the murder of a teenage girl. During the investigation, he accidentally shoots and kills his partner, and is then blackmailed by the girl’s killer to frame someone innocent for the murder. Whew, did you get all that? (Warner Bros., R)

“Bad Company” – Opens June 7. A comedy starring Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins. Rock is Kevin Pope, a brilliant CIA operative, and Pope’s working-class twin Jake. Jake takes over a top-secret mission to keep a rogue nuclear weapon off the black market, when Kevin suddenly is killed. Veteran CIA agent Gaylord Oakes (Hopkins) has to train Jake within nine days before having to negotiate a nuclear weapons deal with terrorists. (Touchstone Pictures, not yet rated)

“Scooby Doo” – Opens June 14. Starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Rowan Atkinson and Kristian Schmid as those lovable teenage meddlers. Complete with references to those taboo questions, like “what’s that smell coming from the Mystery Machine?” (Warner Bros., not yet rated)

“Men in Black II” – Opens July 3. Starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Lara Flynn Boyle, Johnny Knoxville and (!) Michael Jackson. Agents J and K (Smith and Jones) are back to battle aliens, this time in the form of a host of estrogen-charged extra-terrestrials lead by Boyle. (Columbia Tristar, not yet rated)

“Austin Powers in Goldmember” – Opens July 26. Starring Mike Myers, Michael Caine, Josh Zuckerman, Seth Green and Beyonce Knowles. The latest installment in the Powers saga, the swinger must again defeat Dr. Evil, this time with another nemesis in Goldmember. Teaming up with Foxxy Cleopatra (Knowles), Powers must rescue his kidnapped father, England’s renowned spy Nigel Powers. (New Line Cinema, not yet rated)
