DVD New Releases

“Ali” (2001) – A quickie DVD release for an Oscar contender, with star power and a respected director involved? There should be a sticker on this DVD stating, “Stay away from this and wait for the special edition!” The only special feature is a theatrical trailer, and the aim clearly is for the rental market and not collectors. The knockout punch hasn’t been announced, but count on a proper release in time for Christmas.

“Friends: The Complete First Season” (five discs) – Taking the place of multiple volumes of “best-of” DVDs, the first season sees its proper release – and there’s more features than just Chandler’s foppish hair. Producers Kevin S. Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane offer a commentary track for the pilot episode, multiple trivia features and an interactive peek at the Central Perk. In an added bonus, each episode is uncut, providing a few glimpses into what is cut when sitcom time takes effect.

“Jerry Maguire: Special Edition” (1996) – Cameron Crowe continues in his quest to create must-own DVDs for his movies (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Say Anything” and “Almost Famous”) with a features-laden package that almost makes up for that “Show me the money!” debacle. Features include audio and video commentary by Crowe, Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr.; five deleted scenes; rehearsal footage; a feature titled “How to Be A Sports Agent;” a making-of featurette; Bruce Springsteen’s music video for “Secret Garden;” and more than 150 still photographs from the set.

“Not Another Teen Movie” (2001) – Fair teen comedy, reduced to fodder for the guy who runs the awful MTV Movie Award shows (Joel Gallen) to make light of. What did you do to deserve such a fate? Yes, we should blame Freddie Prinze Jr. Anyway, the parody/satire boasts a multitude of extras, including two commentary tracks, a “Pop-Up Video” type of treatment, a 29-minute featurette, 18 deleted scenes, an auditions montage, Marilyn Manson’s video for “Tainted Love” and a teen movie trivia game. One question not asked: Where have you gone, Donger? Teen comedy turns its lonely eyes to you.
