Fire engulfed Cavel building

The DeKalb Fire Department still is investigating a fire that occurred Sunday at the Cavel International Inc. building, 108 Harvestore Drive.

Assistant Fire Chief Reuben Nelson said the investigation continues and is not expected to end for a couple of days.

Currently, investigators are busy collecting evidence and surveying the damage, Nelson said.

Also investigating the case is the DeKalb Police Department. Although there is no additional information into the case, Lt. Jim Kayes said they are involved.

Kayes also said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms soon will get involved with the investigation.

Cavel International Inc. has garnered much controversy because the company slaughters horses and sells the meat to European countries.

Because of the amount of controversy surrounding the company, Nelson said investigators are considering the possibility of “foul play,” but there is no evidence of it as of yet.

Representatives from Cavel International Inc. declined to comment regarding the case.

When firefighters arrived Sunday morning, smoke was coming from the roof of the building and most of the 20,000-square-foot building was engulfed in fire.

It took 52 firefighters about two hours to get the blaze under control. However, it took more than five hours to complete overhaul procedures.

In addition to the main building, a nearby trailer was damaged by the fire.

According to a fire department press release, the building suffered fire, smoke and heat damage, but the owner said the building was insured for $2 million.

Because of the size of the blaze, seven additional area fire departments responded to aid in fighting the fire.

Cavel International Inc. was closed for the Easter holiday, so no one was in the building and no injuries were reported. No animals were reported injured either.
