Winter concert has celestial theme

A guest conductor, a feature pianist and a new location are just some of the features of this year’s Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert.

The concert will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the NIU Music Building’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.

The program features three pieces, including fanfare from “La Peri” by Paul Dukas and “Concerto in F” for piano and orchestra by George Gershwin featuring guest pianist William Koehler.

“He is a member of the community and an accomplished pianist,” said Phyliss Naffziger, general manager of the symphony orchestra. “He can just make the ivories sing.”

The other song to be played will be “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, which will feature the DeKalb Festival Women’s Chorus and will be directed by Judy O’Conner.

“To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time ‘The Planets’ has been done in DeKalb County in 20 years,” guest conductor Linc Smelser said. “It’s a huge event to perform a work of such magnitude.”

To perform that number will take 90 strings, which is basically the whole orchestra, Naffziger said.

The concert will feature guest conductor Smelser, who is usually the orchestra’s first cello. This will be his second time conducting the orchestra.

“He was just asked to put it together,” Naffziger said. “He is an excellent musician.”

Smelser played with the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago for 10 years and was principal cellist of the Rockford Symphony from 1989 to 1996. He also plays with the Catalina String Quartet, Symphony II, Metropolis Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta and is a frequent substitute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The members of the orchestra are community members, supplemented by NIU students. There also are a number of NIU Student Campus Strings members in the orchestra.

Tickets will be available at the door, and cost $8 for adults and $5 for seniors, children and NIU students with ID.

“It should be a great show,” Naffziger said.
