Tacos and prime rib, together at last

By Mike Jackson

After fifteen years of living in the United States, Mauricio and Marisol Luna’s dream finally has come true.

It’s also a dream come true for anyone who likes authentic Mexican food or a black angus steak. Las Margaritas Mexican Cuisine & Steakhouse, 1262 W. Lincoln Highway, opened recently and has people buzzing.

Located in the former McDuffy’s building at 1262 W. Lincoln Highway, the Lunas renovated the building from the ground up to give it an authentic Mexican atmosphere. Renovations took nearly six months and include murals, one hand-painted and one completely airbrushed, and the addition of a canteena (bar) in the back, where you can sit and have a drink and listen to a tune on the jukebox.

“Everything has been changed, from the floor that came from Mexico to the hand made curtains,” said Sheri McIntyre, representative for Las Margaritas. “They would like to bring the atmosphere of their village of Paracuaro to DeKalb.”

Mauricio lived the better part of his life in Paracuaro, where he fell in love with Marisol and the family tradition of restaurant ownership was impressed upon him. Living in America also has affected his life.

“They have lived here for 15 years and have grown to love American food as much as Mexican food,” McIntyre said.

This can be seen upon arrival, when patrons are served complimentary chips and salsa, as well as the soup of the day, to when they order a steak from the lunch or dinner menu and have to decide whether they want it American or Mexican Style. Patrons also can dine on specials like prime rib which are featured during weekends and holidays.

Dining at Las Margaritas also provides a choice of sides, even after the main course has been chosen. American sides such as red skinned potatoes or Mexican sides such as rice and beans are options seldom seen at other Mexican restaurants.

Las Margaritas offers an assortment of alcoholic beverages including six special margaritas, wines and domestic beers and lends an opportunity for patrons to throw a party, offering Spanish serenades for birthdays. The restaurant also offers express lunch and carry-outs.

Future plans for the Lunas include adding an outdoor dining area and booking an authentic mariachi band.

Las Margaritas is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
