DeKalb man threatens girlfriend with sword
February 1, 2002
A DeKalb man is in custody on a $65,000 bond after he allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a 30-inch sword.
Kent Tewksbury, 43, of 132 S. Seventh St., was arrested Tuesday after his girlfriend told officers that Tewksbury had abused her.
The dispute occurred after Tewksbury asked to borrow money, and his girlfriend didn’t want to lend him any, said Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department.
Tewksbury was angered by the response, so he allegedly took a 30-inch sword and held it near the woman’s stomach while threatening her, Kayes said. He then proceeded to punch her, causing her to break her nose and chip two teeth.
The victim left the area and went to receive medical attention in Rockford, Kayes said. She then contacted police.
Tewksbury ran into more problems when officers went to his residence to serve a warrant they had obtained. According to reports, he scuffled with an officer and attempted to poke him in the eye.
“That’s not a good way to interact with police,” Kayes said.
In all, Tewksbury faces seven charges: aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, domestic battery, aggravated battery, battery, resisting a peace officer and unlawful use of a weapon.
The most serious of the charges is aggravated domestic battery, a class two felony which carries up to a $25,000 fine and three to seven years in prison, Kayes said.
Swords aren’t illegal to own, but they can’t be used as weapons or as a means to threaten someone, Kayes said. He added that using a sword to do harm is just like using a knife.
Tewksbury will be in court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 15.
