Task force to hold second Greek Row meeting

The Greek Row Task Force hopes to address public concerns with a series of meetings, each focusing on specific issues that were voiced by residents of the Greek Row community.

The group will hold the second in a series of six meetings Monday at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. The working committee meeting will focus on law enforcement, and though the public is welcome to attend, they will not be allowed to participate in the meeting.

“We are optimistic to address the issues, not only lighting and beautification, but meaty issues like laws and law enforcement,” 1st ward Ald. Andy Small said. “We are working with both the campus and DeKalb police departments to address these issues.”

The meeting will be held by a small group of eight or nine students who will act as an advisory team. These students had expressed prior interest at town meetings and now will serve as the voice of the Greek Row community.

The Greek Row neighborhood is defined as the area between Ride Drive and North Annie Glidden, Normal and Greenbrier roads, and is governed by Small.

Each meeting will look to address a specific topic, including lighting, economic development, parking and safety issues.

“After a series of meetings, the advisory committee will make recommendations to city council based upon their findings,” community service planner Sue Guio said.

The group also plans to hold a town meeting to discuss the recommendations to be heard by the city council.

The task force also has formed a separate committee to address the major concerns expressed by the residents of Greek Row in a survey distributed last October.

The Greek Row Revitalization Task Force consists of residents and property owners in the neighborhood, as well as city officials and will be holding two separate meetings to address issues expressed in the survey.
