Liquor store chugs across town
February 26, 2002
Residents of DeKalb’s north side who purchase their drinks at Lundeen’s Discount Liquors, 2500 Sycamore Road, will have to drive a little farther.
Lundeen’s is moving to a new location at the corner of Arcadia Drive and Annie Glidden Road and is projected to open in the second week of March, said Dave Lundeen, owner of Lundeen’s Discount Liquors. The weather may have some effect on the grand opening, though, Lundeen added.
The move is due to the expansion at Northland Plaza.
“My landlord didn’t want it there anymore,” Lundeen said. “They want the bigger businesses to build there.”
Lundeen said he is glad to be moving to the new location.
“It’s the fastest growing area with all the apartments that are going up there,” Lundeen said. “The projections to the north look to be all housing, so it will be a good move.”
Lundeen is building a new store, which he said will be state-of-the-art, at the corner of Arcadia Drive and Annie Glidden Road.
The store will be 7,150 square feet with a full basement, a 28-door cooler and a machine to read all driver’s licenses, Lundeen said.
The move does, however, bring some added competition to Lundeen’s.
Starbusters Bar and Grill and Thirsty Liquors, both at 930 Pappas Drive, are just down the road from Lundeen’s new spot.
“It’s going to affect everybody,” said Nick Tsiftilis, owner of Starbusters and Thirsty Liquors. “It’s all part of a pie. If you have a piece and someone else wants some, you have to break it up.”
Tsiftilis added that he expects to have the same business and customers he has had for the last two and a half years.
Even though the move will bring more competition, Lundeen treats it just as something he has to deal with.
“We all have competition,” Lundeen said. “It’s a part of life. We may not want it, but we have it.”
