NIU bowling club

By Jim Trentadue

We agree with the March 2 editorial about the Hockey Club. However, we feel the headline, “NIU’s Only Winner Merits More Funds,” was misleading. The men’s gymnastics team and the women’s bowling club are both winners—both teams are nationally ranked.

NIU’s athletic clubs should receive more funding because these teams can bring recognition to NIU. Teams like the hockey and bowling clubs can give NIU a positive image because they are top-notch teams.

The Bowling Club has had a winning tradition for several years now. We feel that increased funding would help our club compete against the other clubs that are fully funded by their universities and receive scholarships.

The chance at the “big time” would greatly improve the students’ view of NIU athletics if these teams continue to be successful. We think the students would appreciate a winner at NIU even if it wasn’t the football or basketball teams. So, maybe it is time for the University Council to give these clubs the chance to better themselves and do even more for the university than they already have.
