Pack your bags for the vacation of a lifetime

By Bob Nelson

The semester is coming to a close, and with it, so is my college career. As much as I hate this town with a passion, I have to admit, I’m going to miss it.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I don’t think I’ll miss DeKalb a whole lot. I won’t miss the hurricane winds, the three crappy radio stations, the speed tables or packing into Molly’s or Amnesia. I won’t miss the ridiculously high phone bills, and I probably won’t miss getting my car towed once a month.

What I’ll really miss is waking up at noon every day. Hell, until a few months ago I had to set my alarm if I wanted to wake up in the a.m. And whenever I go home, by the time I roll out of bed, my dad already will have worked a full day, mowed the whole lawn and put up the Christmas lights.

But that’s all over now. My four-and-a-half-year vacation is over. That’s what it really is, if you think about it & it’s unlimited free time. All you really have to do is sit in a classroom for a few hours a day and study for a few hours more. It may be a pain, but it sure beats working for a living, which is what I’ll have to start doing very soon. I have to exchange my luxurious life filled with doing absolutely nothing, and start doing things. As of right now, I don’t know what those things are, but I know I don’t look forward to doing them.

There will be very little time in my life for doing nothing, which will be quite a transition from now. I do nothing for at least three full days a week now (which is down from seven), and I don’t know how I’ll cope with that being taken away. The days of getting up at 2 p.m., only to go downstairs and lay back down on the couch and watch TV until it’s dark, then finally getting up at nine to go to the bar, are pretty much over for me, so enjoy them while you can. I’m not saying you should neglect your studies and flunk out of school, but just find the time to lay on your couch for a few days straight, because this is the only time you’ll be able to do it.

In fact, my best memories of college aren’t all-night kegger parties or getting blitzed at the bar, but just sitting around with my friends on a Saturday afternoon, or watching the Cubs game with a case of beer on a Tuesday. I can’t imagine my folks would appreciate coming home from work to find me in front of the TV drunk during the week, so I’ll probably have to say goodbye to that, too.

There are a few things I wish I’d done while I was here, like find my way to at least one Huskie football game in the five seasons I’ve been here. That usually makes me feel bad & for about five minutes. And I kind of wish I didn’t take a year-and-a-half detour into the evil college of business, but what am I going to do?

So what’s the point of this column, besides just taking up space? There really is no point, in fact I rarely have a point. I’m not going to tell you to get involved in campus activities, or to go to sporting events, or to not go home on the weekends or any of that crap. Honestly, I really don’t care what you do. This university could shut down next year and it wouldn’t affect me one bit. Just don’t take it so seriously, and enjoy your vacation.
