Men arrested in stabbing
December 5, 2001
A Sunday morning altercation at Douglas Hall left one man injured and three behind bars.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, a suspect attempted to enter Douglas Hall without any identification when he was stopped by the attendant at the door.
“He asked if he could use the bathroom, and I told him he couldn’t come in unless he had some identification,” said Tabish Tanzeem, the door attendant at Douglas.
Tanzeem, a sophomore computer science major, said the man then said he was going to urinate outside and left. However, seconds later eight more men came in.
Police said the men then pushed Tanzeem to the floor before entering and singling out an individual. The suspects allegedly grabbed, punched and kicked another male before one suspect displayed a knife and stabbed him on the right side of his back.
The victim refused medical attention at the scene.
University Police rushed to the scene, but witnesses said the suspects fled upon hearing sirens.
Officers eventually caught up with the suspects after gaining information about their whereabouts from witnesses, Sgt. David Wickstrom said.
Three men were arrested: Samuel O. Osobu, 18, of Chicago, Olusola A. Arojojoye, 19, of Dolton and George O. Olufunmi, 19, of Chicago. The suspects, all NIU students, were charged with aggravated battery and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
The three suspects denied involvement, but victims and witnesses identified them all, Wickstrom said.
The conflict occurred because of an ongoing problem between the suspects and the victim, Wickstrom added.
Aggravated battery is a class three felony. Other charges against the suspects are pending.
