SA co-directors may receive pay

The Student Association has $35,683.35 of its $136,500 administration budget left for the rest of the year.

Although this amount is subject to change, some executives are trying to push through an additional $13,860 for co-directors to be paid whether or not the SA can afford it.

The administration money, which is allocated from the $1.2 million the SA receives in student fees each year, is for use only within the SA office, located in the Campus Life Building, Suite 180. It’s used for a variety of office expenses, SA treasurer Karega Harris said.

Next year’s administration budget proposal was tabled during a Nov. 14 SA Finance Committee meeting, which means all recommendations will be pushed to a later date. At the same meeting, committee members recommended a removal of the $13,860 pay for all SA co-directors from next year’s budget.

“If we didn’t [table] and the budget was approved, it would just be another way to slip their pay in,” said Jeff Meyer, an SA senator and finance committee member.

The co-director money may be argued again before the finance committee. But the final decision on the recommendation is up to the SA senate.

In addition to the questionable co-director pay, the proposed administration budget contained a small mathematical error. This error is attributed to a mistake made when the budget was being drafted, and the tabling will allow the error to be fixed, Meyer said.

Second, the current budget has been the same for the last three years, Harris said.

“There needs to be a new budget so we can have control of where money is spent,” Harris said. “Using the same one doesn’t allow for that.”

The bulk of the administration budget goes to the operating staff and to the student help. The operating staff consists of full-time employees with degrees who work on salary, Harris said. There are only three positions on the operating staff: the SA office manager, a position that recently was vacated, the business manager and the SA accountant, both of which Shyree Sanan is fulfilling. The SA allocated $53,938 for the three positions.

Student help is considered to be anyone who works in the SA office, including the executive staff, directors, co-directors, the president pro-temp, the senate clerk and student secretaries. This group has been allocated $57,578 from the SA administration budget.

The rest of the money in the budget goes to services such as phone bills, printing needs, computer supplies and postage.

As of Nov. 6, the SA had $35,683.35 left to spend, which is to be used for the remaining school year. This amount has the potential to change, however.

“Because there is always some more money that is owed to us, or there is money that we have yet to allocate, the amount can fluctuate,” Harris said.

Some of the money that has been placed back into this year’s budget is from the SA office manager. Debbie Vaughn transferred from the position to the Center of Governmental Studies in early November, leaving money available for the SA to use elsewhere.

These remaining funds will go toward salaries, office supplies and any other SA office-related services, Harris said.

Because the SA administration budget is not on the agenda for the final finance committee of the semester, it will go before the finance committee at the start of the spring semester.
