SA loses directors

The Student Association now is short two directors: Courtney Crawford and Sarah Hammer.

The reasons for both resignations are quite different, however. Circumstances surrounding Crawford’s resignation in particular are clouded in mystery due to tight-lipped reactions from the major parties involved.

At first glance, Crawford’s situation would look to be a personal, not a personnel matter. In an anonymous tip to the Northern Star, the caller said that Crawford was fired because she broke up with SA President Troy Caldwell.

However, although Crawford admits to being Caldwell’s girlfriend for some time, she said the breakup was not the reason for her resignation.

“I chose to resign because of the working environment,” Crawford said in a previous interview. “It was interfering with my school work.”

Crawford declined any further comment on her resignation.

Caldwell also declined any comment on specific details of the resignation because he said it was unfair to Crawford and Hammer since they no longer are employed by the SA.

“The fact remains that [Crawford] resigned and there were no personal reasons for doing so,” Caldwell said. “It was an academic affair as far as I know.”

In October, Crawford was approved as the new SA director of advertising. At the beginning of November, Crawford turned in a letter of resignation from her position.

Last year, Crawford was considered the director of advertising, but worked under the umbrella of the director of transportation. This year the senate voted to create the advertising position and approved Crawford as the director.

Another director calls it quits

During the senate meeting Sunday night, Caldwell informally announced the resignation of Hammer, the director of athletics.

On Thursday, Hammer turned in her keys to chief of staff Jesse Perez and resigned from the SA.

“I needed more time for me and more time to concentrate on school,” Hammer said.

Because of the time constraints, Hammer knew she could not perform the job and felt someone else could devote themselves more than she could.

Hammer was appointed to the position in May when Caldwell was elected SA president. She then was approved by the senate in October.

Despite the two resignations, Perez said the decisions are not indicative of greater problems.

“This is not a typical problem,” Perez said. “We run a tight ship here and sometimes it interferes with their school work.”

Perez also said he is trying to get in touch with Hammer to get all the official papers completed for her resignation.

The SA currently is accepting applications to fill in the vacancies. However, the new directors will not be named until the beginning of the spring semester, Caldwell said.
