Job Fairs connect students with prospective employers

The first ever series of Just for U Job Fairs is looking for students who are specifically interested in a certain career.

Today, the Just for U Job Fair, held in the Campus Life Building, Room 100, will focus on government agencies and Friday the focus will be on non-profit organizations.

“We don’t want to send the message that the government agencies are specifically looking for political science majors,” said Jean Callary, assistant director of Career Planning and Placement Center. “The employers have something for everyone.”

Patricia Liberty-Baczek, an alumni service coordinator, agreed.

“All of our job fairs are always open to all majors,” said Liberty-Baczek.

The idea for the Just for U Job Fairs is to include students on job planning in a more personal way.

“The reason for the The Just for U Fairs is that we are looking for smaller venues of employees who occupy some sort of smaller niche,” Callary said.

Barbara Kaufmann, a graduate placement officer, said the fair has been a big success so far.

“The Health and Human Service Fair last night was a big success for both the employers and students seeking a job,” Kaufmann said. “At previous crowded job fairs, students got lost in the big crowd, but last night they seemed to really get what they want, and they really like being there.”

Callary thinks students not only should participate in the Just for U Job Fairs, but also dress accordingly.

“One of the things that NIU gets high marks on from the employers is that students look good,” said Callary. “Students take the time to dress up to look good, and employers notice that.”

Callary said there aren’t too many bad things that can happen to you at a job fair.

“If the worst thing that happens is that students get information regarding various jobs, then they’re not out much,” Callary said. “The Just for U Job Fair helps students in numerous ways. One way is that employers are coming to you and they want to talk to you regarding your interests in the job market. Everyone is looking to make a good match.”

The employers at the Just for U Job Fair seem to be impressed with NIU students, Callary said.

“Employers know that students are getting a quality education when it comes to NIU,” Callary said.
