Co-director spots raise debate
November 12, 2001
This week’s Student Association Senate meeting was filled with questions of integrity, fiscal allocations and praises of hard work and dedication.
Co-director positions were still up for grabs coming into the meeting. Rod Moyer, current co-director of organizational development, and Nick Williams, the co-director of Greek Affairs hopeful, were up for confirmation.
Questioning came when senator Brad Kuhn submitted a memo regarding Moyer’s status as a student. The memo also included information about Moyer’s previous position as president of Raising Multicultural Excellence (RME).
The submitted documents said Moyer was not a student in spring 2001, despite having signed documents for his organization on Jan. 26 and 27. During this time, Moyer was also RME president, even though he was not a student, which is a requirement to hold an executive position in an student organization.
“I am working with the directors and NIU document center and planning a student retreat for 47 leaders of student organizations,” Moyer said.
Despite this, Kuhn still felt that Moyer’s appointment was unnecessary.
“We need to set an example and follow the policies that are set forth,” Kuhn said. “This is not it.”
When all was said and done, Moyer and Williams were both appointed to co-director positions.
Sen. Jeff Meyer presented the finance committee report, reporting on the organizations that received funding during the Nov. 7 meeting.
Nine organizations were discussed, including the Campus Activities Board and three new student organizations.
The meeting also saw the recognition of several student organizations.
The Sport Club Council, Sigma Alpha Iota (the Women’s International Music Sorority), College Republicans and the NIU College Democrats were all approved during the meeting. E.B.O.N.Y. Men and Dynamic Destruction were both tabled to the next meeting because of a representative absence at the meeting.
During SA President Troy Caldwell’s report to the senate, he presented Don Henderson, director of Students’ Legal Assistance, with a plaque for his years of service to the student body and the SA.
“It’s a thrill to receive something like this, especially since I am just doing my usual thing every day,” Henderson said.
The senate will meet again at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Holmes Student Center’s Clara Sperling Skyroom.
