Wrestlers face lower-level teams
November 30, 2001
When NIU wrestling coach Dave Grant evaluates his wrestlers, the most important thing isn’t how many wins they have, but how they wrestle.
“The end result is to win,” Grant said. “But I think people can get tied up in the end result and not think about the process of what it takes to win.”
When the Huskies (2-0) wrestle in the Elmhurst Duals on Saturday, the process will be Grant’s focal point.
In the dual-meet the Division I Huskies will wrestle three Division III schools.
Host school Elmhurst College will be one opponent. The other two are Loras College and Olivet College. Loras is ranked 14th in the nation in Division III. Olivet is ranked 29th.
Grant said the Huskies can’t take the lower level schools lightly.
“It would make their whole year to beat us,” he said. “You got to realize they’re going to be motivated to come out after us.”
NIU 125-pounder Marlon Felton also said the lower level teams shouldn’t be overlooked, but said the team can accomplish some things against them.
“It gives you a chance to go out and score a lot of points, try some new things and just stay on the guy and break the guy,” he said.
Since the 197-pound starting position hasn’t been determined, both Jack Dennis and Greg Reardon will wrestle one match each Saturday. Grant will decide who will wrestle in the third match based on their performances. Grant, however, will not make a decision on a permanent starter this weekend.
Alexis Rivera, a 125-pounder who hasn’t wrestled yet this season because of a broken right hand, could see action Saturday if he is cleared to wrestle.
Going into this weekend, 157-pound Scott Owen leads all starters with 10 wins this season.
He also is ranked fifth in the nation in his weight class. Huskie 174-pounder Bill Lowney is second with nine wins; Felton, 165-pound Bryce Hasseman and 133-pound Sam Hiatt have seven wins each.
