Investigations ongoing in Super Bowl shooting and car burglary cases
November 2, 2001
Apparently, one bar patron wasn’t ready to leave Molly’s Eatery and Drinkery, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, on Thursday morning.
A suspect was attempting to break into Molly’s through the roof of the building, and while doing so triggered the alarm, said Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department.
DeKalb police responded to the alarm at the establishment around 5 a.m.
By the time officers had arrived on the scene, the perpetrator had taken off, without gaining entry to the building.
Besides minor damage to the roof, nothing else was reported damaged, Kayes said.
The incident at Molly’s is the only major event DeKalb police had to deal with during a relatively quiet Halloween.
“Halloween went well,” Kayes said. “We had a couple of eggs thrown and pumpkins smashed … it was quiet.”
Suspects still at-large in Super Bowl weekend shooting
No one has been arrested in the shooting of three victims on the morning of Jan. 28 during a party at 885 Regent Drive.
Though it’s been eight months since three male victims were shot, Lt. Kayes said the case is not closed by any means.
“It’s still an open case,” Kayes said. “We expect that sometime in the future we will arrest and identify someone in this case.”
Initial reports identify the gunman as a 6-foot tall black male in his late teens or early 20s wearing a black puffy coat and black pants the night of the shootings.
At least one person who was at the party has to know the shooter, Kayes said.
There were at least 50 people present at the party, but they aren’t speaking up, Kayes said.
There are a number of reasons why people might not be speaking up. It could be fear, the shooter might be their friend, they might be too busy to deal with the criminal justice system or they might not even care, Kayes said.
If someone has information, they should get involved, Kayes said. People shouldn’t feel like this situation isn’t their responsibility. It would be like saying it’s OK to shoot someone as long as it isn’t my friend, he added.
No new arrests in car burglaries
DeKalb police have not charged anyone in last week’s string of car burglaries around the Greek Row area.
Two DeKalb residents believed to be involved have been arrested on different charges, but neither has been charged in the burglaries yet, Kayes said.
One of the men involved is somewhat of a break-in expert. He’s broken into more cars than he can remember, Kayes said.
It is unknown if the two arrested men have committed all the burglaries or just a few, but Kayes said the department does have two more suspects they hope to catch up with soon.
