Local bar granted continuance by mayor
November 20, 2001
A continuance was granted Monday afternoon to Arcade Dreams, 1205 W. Lincoln Highway, concerning the revocation or suspension of its Class E liquor license.
In light of additional charges filed against owner George Broches on Monday by the city of DeKalb, Mayor Greg Sparrow, also the city’s liquor commissioner, agreed to a new hearing. The public hearing is rescheduled for 4 p.m. Dec. 3 at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., Room 200.
According to the subpoena, Arcade Dreams served alcohol to minors without asking for proper identification and allowed patrons to consume alcohol in areas other than the bar area. Additional violations include a charge that Arcade Dreams does not have enough floor space in its establishment because of the presence of video game machines.
Over the objections of City Attorney Margo Ely, Sparrow agreed to a continuance and allowed defense counsel adequate time to prepare its case.
Arcade Dreams had its liquor license suspended various times earlier this year for failure to maintain liquor liability insurance from Oct. 5, 2000, to Jan. 23, 2001, and for violation of its Class E license. The Class E license requires that an establishment have 60 percent of its revenue come from the sale of food and the other 40 percent from the sale of alcohol.
Broches filed for bankruptcy last year, which postponed other city hearings and delayed payment of more than $2,000 in fines from liquor license violations. The bankruptcy case was dismissed on Jan. 17 of this year, and Broches was required to pay the fines. Arcade Dreams’ license was suspended until March 20.
