Coming home again

Despite being Senior Night at Chick Evans Field House, the three seniors on the NIU volleyball team acted like it wasn’t their last home game.

Carrie Blankenship, Sara Lein and Jen Scarpino played their last regular season home game at the Field House, and while the trio was honored before the game with a brief overview of their career and presented with flowers, there were no emotions shown afterwards.

“It’s just a game,” Lein said. “It was the final regular season home match, but we know we are coming back.”

The Huskies host the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Nov. 20, and have a chance of hosting the rest of the tournament if they are the highest remaining seed come the semifinals.

NIU coach Todd Kress said the reason why there were no emotions on the court Friday is because of the fact that the Huskies have yet to see their last home game this season.

“I think they are having a hard time coming up with the words because it wasn’t a normal Senior Night,” Kress said. “We hope that Senior Night is on Nov. 24 on a Saturday night when we are playing for the conference championship.”

In the Huskies’ 3-0 win over Eastern Michigan, it was the seniors who had a role in the final points in each of the three games.

Blankenship scored the final point in the 30-27 Game 1 win, while Lein had the final kill in Game 2 to give the Huskies the 30-18 win. Blankenship had the assist to junior outside hitter Rena Widboom to give the Huskies the 30-28 Game 3 win.

Blankenship finished the game with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Lein finished with a .375 hitting percentage and eight kills. Lein also had two service aces in Game 3, helping the Huskies pull within one on each ace. Scarpino had 10 digs.
