DeKalb man brushes with robbery
October 9, 2001
Give me your money, or I’ll brush your hair.
Doesn’t sound too scary, but two guys must have thought a brush would be a suitable substitute for a gun during an attempted robbery Monday night.
Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department said the incident occurred about 8:15 p.m Monday in the 1000 block of Spiros Court, when two suspects approached the victim while he was near his vehicle and proceeded to put an object in his side and then demanded money.
After determining that the object was nothing more than a wooden brush, the victim refused to give up any money and the suspects fled on foot, Kayes said.
The first suspect is described by the victim as a black male about 5-foot-11 with a medium build and a stuttering problem.
The only description for the second suspect was that he was a black male, and wore a bandana over his face, as did the first suspect.
The police hadn’t arrested anyone as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, but Kayes did say this case is similar to two other robberies in DeKalb in recent weeks.
Two weeks ago on Normal Road, two individuals with bandanas over their faces robbed a victim.
The other incident occurred last week, when a man walking in the downtown area accepted a ride from two individuals. The two suspects proceeded to beat the victim and rob him, Kayes said. He also mentioned that the police department has leads in this case and could be making an arrest in the upcoming days.
Because of the proximity of Spiros Court to Normal Road and the similarities between the two crimes, there is a good chance that those two incidents are related, Kayes said, but he can’t be certain.
“It’s gonna keep happening until we catch this guy,” Kayes said. “It might be the same nitwits that have been at it off and on since May.”
