Should the bus stop here?

Arranging shuttle buses to travel to Geneva and possibly to Fox Valley Mall in Aurora still is on the Student Association’s agenda.
Last year, the SA’s Mass Transit Board proposed to have shuttle buses running between Aurora and DeKalb. The buses will provide commuting students with a way to travel without driving, said Christy Hartnett, SA director of transportation.
“[In the proposal], the shuttle buses will run seven days a week from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. back and forth from DeKalb to Aurora,” Hartnett said. “This will also help solve the parking problem.”
The buses, which would hold between 25 to 30 people, also would transport students to places like the Geneva Train Station or to Fox Valley Mall.
“One major complaint was there was no shopping mall here, so we are providing transportation to the Fox Valley Mall,” Hartnett said.
Through the public opinion lab, a survey was taken among students to gauge interest in the buses & only 5 percent of the student population wanted the shuttle buses to run during the week.
“A little under 50 percent was interested in the shuttle bus going to Geneva Train Station and Fox Valley Mall over the weekend,” Hartnett said. “We are looking into that part of the project.”
The Mass Transit Board will vote on the shuttle buses Wednesday, and if they decide against it, nothing is going to happen, Hartnett said. If they decide for it, the buses will run on a trial basis in spring 2002, and if the trial is successful, the bus service probably will continue, Hartnett said.
“I think it’ll be a great idea to have buses going to Fox Valley Mall,” sophomore biology major Zabrina Sanders said. “A lot of people like myself don’t have vehicles, so transportation will be needed.”
