Hammock’s streak snapped

Toledo, OHIO — In a game that featured the two best tailbacks in the Mid-American Conference, the match-up of Toledo’s Chester Taylor and NIU’s Thomas Hammock fell short of the hype.

The MAC rushing leader and Heisman candidate Taylor finished the game with 132 yards and three touchdowns on 32 attempts.

The Rocket defense did its job in shutting down Hammock, limiting the junior to only 10 yards on 10 carries, snapping a school record eight-game 100-yard rushing streak. It was Hammock’s worst outing as a starter since Sept. 30, 2000, when Hammock rushed for 39 yards on 16 carries against Ball State.

It was the Rockets’ third time this season they held a 1,000-yard rusher from 2000 to under 100 yards. Minnesota’s Tellis Redmon and Temple’s Tanardo Sharps also were held to under 100 yards.

“We didn’t establish the run,” Hammock said. “They did. That helped establish their passing game and there was the outcome of the game.”

Close call: Starting quarterback Chris Finlen got knocked around toward the end of the first half, and sat out a couple of plays as a result.

The senior left the game after bruising his thumb on his right throwing hand when he threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to junior split end P.J. Fleck.

“It’s going to be sore tomorrow,” Finlen said. “I just had a couple of stitches. I’ll be all right.”

No luck: NIU is now 1-19 against Associated Press Top 25 teams.

The Huskies’ lone victory came against then No. 24 Fresno State, beating the Bulldogs 73-18 on Oct. 6, 1990.

Record Breakers: Taylor’s 18 points on three touchdowns gave him 306 career points, moving him past Rusty Hanna as Toledo’s all-time leading scorer. Hanna had 298 points in his career. Taylor’s three touchdowns also gave him 51 for his career, good for second best in the MAC. Former Miami tailback Travis Prentice holds the record with 73.

Also, the paid attendance of 36,502 set a Glass Bowl and MAC record. The previous Glass Bowl record was 34,950 when the Rockets beat Minnesota 38-7. The previous MAC record was 36,361 for the Indiana State-Western Michigan game on Sept. 16, 2000.
