Sgt. Peppers reopens as RT’s
September 5, 2001
Although you may have enjoyed the show, the restaurant formerly known as Sergeant Peppers has changed its name and ownership.
Located at 1022 West Lincoln Highway, RT’s (after new owner Artie Alberts) is the newest name of the restaurant, whose location has made it a staple in DeKalb’s dining history.
Originally opened as Sergeant Peppers in the 1970s, the eatery was under the same ownership for nearly 25 years.
“The original owners, Edy and Kevin, ran the restaurant until December of 1995, when they closed it down,” said Eric Olsen, manager of RT’s, who has worked in the building since the spring of 1995 when he was only 17.
In July 1996, brothers Chris and Mike Carpenter, owners of Molly’s and Amnesia, got together with Dan Metka and re-opened the restaurant.
“The previous owners had lost interest in the restaurant,” said Chris Carpenter. “So we came in, remodeled and cleaned it up.”
The Carpenters then sold the building to Alberts after their previous partner left town.
“We thought it would be better for a restaurant person to take over,” Carpenter said. “Artie has a lot of restaurant experience,” Carpenter said.
Alberts also has leased Pizza Pro’s from the Carpenter brothers for a few years.
Since taking over the restaurant, Alberts (who just completed his 10th year of working in area restaurants) has made a few changes. Most notably, the restaurant’s name was changed two weeks ago.
The new sign should be up soon, Alberts said, while the menu, which is full of pizzas, burgers, salads, sandwiches and appetizers, will be very similar to the old Sergeant Peppers menu.
“We will have a few new appetizers and change the menu a little,” Olsen said.
Alberts added that all the popular items will remain on the menu, and he promises to serve quality food at a decent price.
“Were not advertising a lot yet,” Alberts said. “… we just need to get a little more organized and staffed.”
RT’s will begin delivering again and will offer $1 hot dogs during Monday Night Football games.
