Fleck puts on the moves against Bearkats

By Nick Gerts

P.J. Fleck was amazed at his performance Saturday night.

The junior split end finished with a team-high eight receptions for 153 yards, also a team high, and two touchdowns. Fleck had more yards in one game than he had in the seven games he played last season. Fleck has a career-high 284 yards this season on 22 receptions

“I am still in shock,” Fleck said. “Darrell [Hill] and Keith [Perry] blocked really well down the field. Chris [Finlen] put the ball right on the money where it needed to be and I just ran with it. Even though I am not really fast, I tried to make them miss. At least I didn’t get caught.”

Fleck couldn’t believe it took him almost three years to get his first receiving touchdowns of his career. It took him 21 games to score them.

The junior did score on a four-yard run in the Huskies’ 52-0 win over Illinois State last season.

Against Sam Houston, Fleck had touchdowns for 31 yards and 55 yards.

Finlen, who is Fleck’s roommate, said the whole team has been on Fleck’s case because he hasn’t scored a touchdown in the 21 games he has played. Fleck won’t have to hear those complaints anymore.

“He’s loving it now,” the senior quarterback said. “I am excited for him and I know everyone is for him. It is good for him [to finally get his first touchdown].”

Fleck said after he caught Finlen’s pass, he saw nobody ahead of him and he started thinking endzone.

“Chris threw a great ball over the middle,” he said. “After that, I turned around and there was nobody there. Turner Pugh put a nice block on the corner on the outside. I saw the pilon and just ran for it. I saw a guy coming and just tried to make a move and made him miss. I just didn’t want to get caught from behind.”
