Frustrations continue

Although coach Frank Horvat thinks his team played well this weekend, the Huskies fell to 0-3-1 after being shut out for the third and fourth times this season in the Florida International University Women’s Classic.

On Friday night, the team lost 2-0 to host Florida International. On Sunday, the Huskies lost 1-0 in overtime to Florida Atlantic.

FIU’s Michele O’Brien scored a goal in the first half and added an assist in the second half as the Panthers improved to 2-1 with the win.

“We played well enough to win tonight,” Horvat said. “We played with a lot of character and pride. We’re getting opportunities in the box but not finding the net.”

Huskie goalie Akiko Iwabuchi saved 11 of the Panthers 13 shots on goal, but the Huskies were outshot 24-4.

The Huskies took FAU (3-2) to overtime before Rhonda Jones scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the extra period.

“We had an opportunity with eight minutes left in regulation but were a little unfortunate with the way the ball bounced,” Horvat said.

After the two shutouts, the Huskies are still looking for their first goal. The Huskies have not scored a goal in 394 minutes and 10 seconds of action this season.

“I’m proud of the way we played,” he said. “We’re getting better as a team, but we’re not getting the results we’d like. But we took a big step in the positive direction.”
