Road extension shot down
September 17, 2001
Third Ward Ald. Steve Kapitan’s proposal to extend Dresser Road to Peace Road was killed at Monday night’s DeKalb City Council workshop without a formal vote.
At last week’s city council meeting, Kapitan suggested that it would be better to extend Dresser Road in order to avoid future traffic problems in the area.
This stirred controversy because representatives of John Claire Ltd., the developers of the proposed Greenwood Acres Estates, had an agreement with DeKalb County to extend Greenwood Acres Drive at no expense to taxpayers.
Although several aldermen found elements of Kapitan’s proposal to extend Dresser Road instead of Greenwood Acres Drive attractive, ultimately carrying it out would have proven too disruptive, the council decided.
Paul Rasmussen, director of city development, and Ralph Tompkins, director of public works, gave a briefing in which it was explained that to extend Dresser Road, a park would be partially ripped up, a golf course would lose at least one hole, several houses would have to be torn down, a bridge would have to be built and Greenwood Acres Estates, which will consist of 318 townhomes, would have to be radically redesigned.
Rasmussen was given the mandate to discover how much it would cost the city to extend Greenwood Acres Drive from the railroad trestle to Peace Road, in case a second developer isn’t found right away to complete the task that John Claire Ltd. will take on as part of building Greenwood Acres Estates.
