Shakespeare returns to the park
September 6, 2001
DeKalb will get a taste of culture with the return of the Repercussion Theatre’s “Shakespeare in the Park.”
“I don’t know exactly what to expect,” said Quinn Norman, CAB fine arts coordinator. “But I know it will be good.”
The Repercussion Theatre comes from Quebec, Canada, and is the only “Shakespeare in the Park” touring company in North America. This will be their third performance at NIU. This year’s production will be Shakespeare’s comedy “Twelfth Night,” a story of twins separated at birth, filled with mystery, twists, turns, love and a little crossdressing.
Each year, the theater group performs a unique performance of a Shakespearian work, with past performances including “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Romeo and Juliet.”
The group tries to emphasize Shakespeare’s humorous work, as opposed to his well-known tragic themes, giving audiences a unique twist on the original story.
Repercussion likes to bring a little something different to all of their shows and likes to keep their audiences on their toes. Last year, the theater featured sword fighting before the performance. This year’s pre-performance, or “Green Show,” will be the Festival of Fools, in which the actors of the play will transform into fire breathers, circus acrobatics, trapeze artists, jugglers and face painters.
The Festival of Fools will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday behind the Engineering Building. The festival will be followed by “Twelfth Night’s” at 8 p.m. It’s recommended to bring lawn chairs and blankets. For tickets or more information, call 753-3146.
