Men’s soccer hands it to alumns

The revamped NIU men’s soccer team had its offense working early Saturday at the annual Alumni SoccerFest exhibition as it defeated the alumni 9-6.

Huskie freshmen accounted for seven of the nine goals netted in the contest. Freshman Vrahram Kadkhodaian scored four goals, while freshman Brad Monk added a pair of goals and assists.

Sophomore Jason Tithof and junior Rasih Pala, who took a leave from the goalie position, each added a goal to round out the scoring.

The Huskies took 20 shots on goal while holding the alumni to nine.

“Bruce Conrad did another good job in the back, and our defense of Matt Stukenburg, Peter Agrimson and Jason Sullivan were solid when they were in there,” head coach Willie Roy said.

The Huskie alumni fell behind 2-0 early, but scored a goal on Mike Gentile’s penalty kick. The alumni scored goals in each of the next two periods to bring their score to six.

In the SoccerFest scoring system, alumni get one point for goals scored in the first period and two and three points in the second and third periods, respectively.

Over 30 alumni came out for the event and represented nearly all of the first 39 years of NIU soccer.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to have so many alumni come back, especially with the threatening weather,” Roy said. “That’s a tremendous sign of their support of the program and a lot of these alums are still very good players.”

In earlier exhibition action, the Huskies tied Division II powerhouse Lewis University 1-1. Kadkhodaian scored NIU’s lone goal in the 64th minute of the game.

The offense came to life against Dominican University in a 4-0 victory. Andrew Conti scored a pair of goals for NIU.
