NIU’s brand new Juhl
August 29, 2001
The University Programming and Activities office has a brand new Juhl.
Chris Juhl has taken the position as NIU’s activities adviser for Greek Affairs. He considers himself to be professional and efficient, and he expects the same from students. He maintains that his door is always open.
A former Greek adviser for the University of Oregon, he plans to put the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and the National Panhellenic Council on the same page. These groups are the governing bodies for individual sororities and fraternities on campus.
Juhl, a member of the Greek fraternity Phi Kappa Tau of Iowa State University, also aspires to bring NIU’s Greek community closer together as a whole. He suggests more programs and functions are given together rather than divided.
As far as previous opinions given by students regarding NIU’s Greek organizations, Juhl isn’t worried.
“I take it with a grain of salt,” Juhl said.
While discussing the fact that within the past four years NIU has had four different activities advisers for Greek Affairs, Juhl said not only was he looking for consistency, but the students deserve consistency as well.
Juhl also said he’s heard some good news and some bad, but nothing out of the ordinary. Not knowing what changes he will make, Juhl also said he will let the campus, students and time tell him what changes need to be made.
One issue Juhl said might need to be addressed is risk management. He explained that sometimes Greek communities feel as if the rules are too overbearing.
Rick Clark, director of University Programming and Activities, explained the other advisers did not leave on bad terms. Two left for better job offers and the third had not officially taken the position, but was a replacement until someone new was found. Juhl rounds out the group as number four.
“They all went on to bigger and better things,” Clark said.
Clark added that NIU was lucky to get Juhl, because in his opinion, he’s able to do the job.
“Without the students, I don’t have a job,” he said.
Clark also said his expectations of Juhl were high. He said he expects Juhl to lead Greek organizations down a path to provide more service.
Clark said that Greeks have made an honest effort of improvement , but he expects Juhl to make sure to continue with social service events and take greeks to the next plateau.
