Waste of time?

By Jonathan Koepke

As one goes through life, he or she gains new perspectives and wisdom with each passing experience. Whether that experience is a positive or negative one, something is always learned.

Over time, children and young adults grow-up, obtain wisdom and above all, responsibility. Gaining responsibility is what college is about. One of the other important things college is about, is expanding one’s mind and experience to thus gain perspective and responsibility.

One way college students “expand their horizons,” is through inebriation. College students drink, and they drink a lot. End of story. College students experiment, and some habitually use drugs such as marijuana and a vast array of others. Still, alcohol usage is far more prevalent. For the record, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

College is supposed to be a time to be open-minded and to expand horizons, yet at the same time there needs to be a balance between having fun, getting lit and going to class or work.

There are not a great deal of people that would disagree with these statements. There is an issue that people take far more seriously: underage drinking. Let us take, for example, the new initiative, Project 21. This rather over-hyped general nuisance has taken ahold of DeKalb with the purpose of cutting down on underage drinking. This is an incredible waste of time, money and effort.
