Clemens out for the season
August 27, 2001
After breaking a bone in his foot during drills, Greg Clemens will have to sit out this season.
The junior tackle said the bone has always been broken, it just hasn’t healed. There is a chance that his career is over, but Clemens will get a second opinion on his foot.
The loss of Clemens comes shortly after the Huskies lost three offensive linemen. Graham Sleight’s career is in jeopardy after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, Ben Lueck is out for the year rehabbing from a car accident and Gary Young quit the team.
“It’s tough,” Clemens said. “I have been doing this for 13 years. It’s really hard to sit out a season.”
After losing McAllister Collins, Ryan Diem and Kyle Jakubek to graduation, the offensive line was a question mark going into the preseason. Now with the loss of Clemens, Lueck, Sleight and Young from the line, the Huskies will have to go with a younger group.
Coach Joe Novak said the Huskies have gone with two freshmen on the second line. Shea Fitzgerald and Brian Van Acker have received practice time with the second stringers. Even though Novak would like to see them red-shirted, they will get some playing time this year.
“We have lost more than expected on the line,” Clemens said. “But I feel confident in those guys. Timmy Vincent; Pederson; they have been doing a good job so far in practice.”
