Latino folk band visits NIU today

The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies is attempting to build a bridge between NIU and the Latino community by bringing Tlen-Huicani, a traditional Mexican and Latino folk band, to campus at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Music Building’s Concert Hall.
“All the members of Tlen-Huicani are from Veracruz, Mexico, and they are dedicated to preserving and promoting the musical heritage of Veracruz,” said Michael Gonzales, director of the Center for Latino/Latin American Studies.
“The centerpiece of their music is the harp,” he added. “It is not the type of music we associate with the harp in this country. It is lively and fast paced. Alberto de la Rosa, the leader of the group, has been named the world’s greatest harpist.”
Gonzales said that music is an integral part of the Latin and Latin-American culture, and it is important to expose NIU students to it.
