Kind of like the Barenaked Ladies

What do John Ugolini, Jim Kidonakis and Bill O’Sullivan have in common? They’re the three hottest chicks on campus radio without being female.
The freshman, sophomore and junior visual communication major trio, known as “3 Hot Chicks” on WKDI (93.5), live on the same floor at Douglas Hall, where they thought about doing their own radio show in the past and decided to go ahead with it in October.
The show airs from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays on WKDI (93.5) and can be heard in the residence halls on channels 8 and 20. It also can be heard online at www.wkdi.org, or by using a special stereo transmitter available at the Holmes Student Center.
“I would never have done it without Jim and Bill,” Ugolini said. “Without them, I was just a scared puppy dog.”
The first time the show broadcast, the trio had no stage name, so they had a contest over the air for suggestions.
Proposals from listeners included Bucknaked and The Beck Trio, but Ugolini said they decided on “3 Hot Chicks” because it would catch people’s attention and make for good advertising.
Kidonakis said the name was chosen because it was the “least lame.”
The show doesn’t have a format, meaning the hosts play pretty much what they want, O’Sullivan said. The Chicks hail Weezer as one of their favorite bands and offer a variety of music during their airtime.
Kidonakis describes the playlist as “eclectic,” and said they sometimes run themes, such as the episode when they only played songs with women’s names for titles.
A regular fan base quickly has developed.
“It’s a fun variety show. My floor listens to it every week,” said freshman education major Huma Farook.
Freshman marketing major Connie Cwudzinski said the 3 Hot Chicks are hysterical.
“They chat with us on air and make our day,” she said. “If they don’t have the song we request, they still will find something to fit our personalities.”
The trio also has been known to play pranks on air. O’Sullivan said Ugolini once called a woman who thought he was her boyfriend. Ugolini went along with it.
“She didn’t even know the voice of her own lover,” O’Sullivan said.
The threesome hasn’t decided whether to continue the show in the fall. They’re just as undecided about their individual radio careers.
“I originally wanted to use the show to pick up women,” Ugolini said. “I’ll probably stay in the business until nobody cares anymore.”
Kidonakis said he’d like to work at a radio station if he needed a job and had nothing better to do.
For now, the 3 Hot Chicks will keep their engagements on WKDI airwaves, taking inspiration from radio personalities such as Rush Limbaugh, Chris Hardwick and Dr. Drew.
As for shock jocks like ManCow and Howard Stern, Kidonakis said: “They’ve got nothing on us.”
“We’re a family show,” O’Sullivan added, laughing. “Those guys are too lewd.”
