Tennis loses last match of season

The NIU women’s tennis team finished their regular season match play with a loss to Western Michigan on Saturday.

The 6-1 loss hands the Huskies a Mid-American Conference record of 3-6 for the season.

The only win came from Kris Tiedt, who played No. 4 singles. Tiedt won by default and played only two matches before the WMU player got injured.

“Western Michigan had to win to get the title, and we fought them the whole way,” said Coach Laura Scott.

Scott was proud of the outcome of the match, despite the loss, saying it showed the team what they need to work on.

“We have proven we’re close to a lot of teams with better records than ours,” said Scott. “We still need a little more maturity, though.”

Scott also said maturity will make a big difference for future matches. The team has three freshmen and three upperclassmen.

The freshmen were instrumental in the victories the team had last week against Buffalo and Akron.

The Huskies next round of play will be at the MAC championships in Huntington, W.Va. The championships will be held at Marshall University from April 26-28.
