Tennis craves payback against conference foes

The NIU women’s tennis team has its sights set on rematches with Marshall and Miami University when the teams head to the Mid-American Conference tennis tournament.
“It would be a little bit of revenge if we could see them again,” said junior Molly Opel.
The team ended regular-season play last weekend, finishing with a 3-6 record after losing to Western Michigan University. Two of its conference losses were to Marshall, which beat NIU 6-1 on March 23, and to Miami, which blanked the Huskies 7-0 the next day.
After a short practice, the Huskies left Wednesday for Marshall, where the tournament is being held. The Huskies face Akron in the first round.
NIU just played Akron on April 14, dominating 5-0.
Coach Laura Scott’s aim is to get all her players involved in the Akron match, especially senior Ashley Brunk, who has been injured most of the season. This will be Brunk’s last chance to play in a MAC tournament before she graduates in May.
Team members are excited about the tourney.
“I think we’re underdogs,” Opel said. “We‘re ready to put it all together.”
Scott said she’s pleased with the underclassmen development, and added that the team did well considering this year’s schedule was the toughest it’s played.
“We had some tough MAC meets, but I think it’s made us realize we’re right there with them,” junior Kris Tiedt said of conference opponents.
For the team to win, it will have do some things differently during the tournament, Scott said.
“We’re going to have to go all-out — play harder than we’ve played all year,” she said.
