Sprucing up the lagoon
April 26, 2001
To make the campus a beautiful place, little changes always make a difference.
Thanks to the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, a new tree and bench will be added to the East Lagoon, which is located in front of Montgomery Hall.
The campus’ oldest sorority is sponsoring the changes to celebrate its 150th year.
“In honor of the anniversary, we wanted to donate something to help the school,” said Kristine Wigginton, a leader in the project and a family social sciences major.
The sorority called NIU about what to donate, and the two groups teamed up for ideas on how to spend the $2,500 donation. The university came up with the idea for the park bench and tree.
“We wanted to know where the money would go,” Wigginton said.
Active members of the sorority raised the money through a 5K run and walk marathon held earlier this year, and contributions also were made by a few Alpha Delta Pi alumni.
Next Thursday the sorority will present the money to Bob Albanese, vice president of financial operations, at 4 p.m. in front of Lowden Hall. The tree and bench will be installed by next spring.
“We are the first organization to present money to the school,” Wigginton said. “The university wanted to make a big deal out of it.”
