Election starts over again

The Student Association Board of Elections’ Thursday decision still stands, invalidating the results of last week’s elections.

Board chair Emiko Pope said there will be a special election Wednesday to determine the SA president, vice president and treasurer, along with student trustee.

The board made its ruling after miscommunication at the library resulted in a 7 percent difference between the number of OneCards swiped and the total number of ballots. SA Elections Policy states there only can be a 5 percent difference.

Arra and Suzanne Garab served as election judges when the voting recognition problems occurred. The first swipes gave the message “Begin Transaction,” a message the election-judging veterans knew was different.

Arra said the main problem was that he could not get an elections official to check on the swiping machines until about 2 p.m. Tuesday, about four hours after initially discovering the problem. A lack of a radio furthered the temporary communication breakdown.

The next day a OneCard official said the error could have come from a faulty connection from the hardware to OneCard offices, grit in the hardware or improper swiping.
