Court date set for hit-and-run driver

More than six months after her original arrest date, former NIU student Maria Sarantopoulos will appear in court May 14 for a case involving the Sept. 15 hit-and-run accident and the death of fellow student Nicole Murawski.

Sarantopoulos appeared before DeKalb County Circuit Judge Douglas R. Engel at 10 a.m. Monday, one of many court appearances she’s made since her September arrest. The 22-year-old Loves Park resident was charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death, after police say her car struck and killed Murawski as she crossed Annie Glidden Road north of Crane Drive.

On Oct. 4, a DeKalb grand jury justified the reckless homicide charge based on evidence that Sarantopoulos was driving under the influence of alcohol. At the time of her arrest, she was charged only with leaving the scene of an accident.

She pleaded not guilty to both charges on Oct. 20.

Sarantopoulos testified Jan. 29 in a hearing to suppress statements she made to DeKalb police after the accident. Both Sarantopoulos’ attorney Randy Wilt and prosecutor Clint Hull debated court dates on Monday, leaving a 1:30 p.m. meeting for May 14.

If convicted, Sarantopoulos could face three to 14 years in prison for each of the Class 2 felonies.

Several of Murawski’s family members were present at Monday’s status hearing. Known as “Nickie” to her family and friends, Murawski was preparing for pharmacy school as a senior biology major at NIU.
