Clock continues ticking for SA jobs
April 17, 2001
Troy Caldwell, the Student Association’s president-elect, is on the lookout for next year’s executive staff.
Applications are available at the SA office and will be accepted until Friday. Among the new jobs is an executive position called “transition director,” for which Caldwell already has hired SA veteran Chris Spitzzeri.
Caldwell said there’s a great concern that new executives move smoothly from spring elections into a new school year.
“This will make life easier for new executives,” he said. “We want to make sure that within this transition period that student interests are not lost or overlooked.”
Spitzzeri formerly served as a student senator and deputy senate speaker. He was removed from the latter, unpaid position late last spring when the senate dissolved the job.
A year ago, Spitzzeri ran for the SA presidency, sharing a ticket with Caldwell, who sought the SA treasurer’s job. Caldwell cut association with Spitzzeri a week before that election and won his race, while Spitzzeri lost to Ken Getty.
Spitzzeri and Caldwell already are outlining issues to tackle over the summer, which include extending DeKalb bar hours on Thursday nights and working with Class-E licensed businesses to create a dance club atmosphere for students. A safety campaign inspired by Annie Glidden Road accidents is another priority, as is DeKalb’s controversial landlord-tenant proposal, which would give more rights to student tenants.
Spitzzeri speaks highly of the late-night ride service available locally.
“However, a student service isn’t a student service if students are not aware of it,” he said.
In addition to planning the summer work, Spitzzeri will organize Caldwell’s inauguration and set up interviews between Caldwell and executive applicants.
This year, Caldwell personally will interview everyone who applies for an executive position, Spitzzeri said.
“It’s a lot of extra work, but it’s worth doing this right,” he said.
