Women’s tennis falls short

The NIU women’s tennis team may have lost both their matches over the weekend, but they did not give up without a fight.

On Friday at Bowling Green, the women lost by only one point, winning two of the three doubles and two of the six singles matches.

Molly Opel and Kris Tiedt played No.1 doubles and won 8-4. Branka Savic and Kristi McIntyre won in No.3 doubles 9-7. In singles play, Savic, playing at the No.1 singles slot, won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Tiedt won the second singles match for NIU, which was Tiedt’s 12th win of the year.

“Bowling Green’s seniors played very well, so I have to give them credit,” said NIU coach Laura Scott.

On Saturday at Ball State, NIU lost 2-5 but still claimed three victories.

Savic won for the second time over the weekend in the first singles position, this time against BSU’s Gena Tranquada. Opel’s defeat of BSU’s Susie Miller counted as her eighth win of the year and fifth of the season. The third victory of the day was in doubles match play. The team of Tanja Sukovic and Karrie Tyioran defeated their opponents 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles position.

“The last two weeks we have stepped up, and we are improving every week,” said Scott.
