Recent stabbing has cops alert
April 22, 2001
University Police continue to investigate two separate stabbings on campus, one April 11 outside the Holmes Student Center and another Thursday night in the Grant Towers South lobby.
The most recent incident, which happened about 11 p.m. Thursday, stemmed from what police and witnesses described as a fight over a spilled Fruit Works drink near Grant’s automatic teller machine.
“We’re still trying to sort out what happened where and what happened to who,” said Lt. John Hunter, interim University Police chief. “We know that two people were involved in an altercation, and we know who those people are.”
Scanner reports indicated that NIU undecided major Michael Malcolm was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital shortly after the stabbing occurred. He was released over the weekend.
A witness outside of Grant said that two cars quickly left the scene before police arrived and a third vehicle started to leave but stopped when police came. A group of men reportedly got out of that vehicle and headed toward Douglas Hall.
UP Sgt. Dave Wickstrom said the suspect fled the scene after the stabbing. Hunter said Friday that police have narrowed down suspect names but still are clarifying witness accounts. Also on Friday, officers met with representatives from the DeKalb State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what charges would be filed.
Between 11:45 p.m. and midnight April 11, police received a call that someone had been shot outside of Grant Towers North. When officers arrived, they found the victim had been stabbed, not shot.
Hunter said that investigation had been narrowed to a few suspects, but no arrests have been made. Because the victim is being uncooperative, the department is not releasing his name.
