Coyner’s contact adds to record win streak

Huskies first baseman Brent Coyner can’t believe he’s part of something no NIU baseball team has enjoyed since the program was brought back in 1991.

After the Huskies beat Mt. St. Clare 7-0 Tuesday, they extended their winning streak to a record six games.

“This is pretty neat,” Coyner said. “This is something very special to be a part of. This is a great feeling, especially with what the program went through a couple of years ago.”

When Dave Schrage was brought in as the Huskies’ coach, NIU was coming off a 4-51-1 season. So far, Schrage has seen his plan of building a winning

program come together this year. A 9-8 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Tuesday, when the Huskies scored four runs in the ninth inning to give them their first win of the streak, could be the turning point of the season, he said.

“This is a nice accomplishment for our players,” Schrage said. “One of the first things we tried to establish when we took over the program was a winning attitude. I said after the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game that those types of games could be the turning point of a season. So far it has.”

Coyner delivers: In the recent homestand, Coyner has been on a tear.

The sophomore went 1-for-1 on Tuesday and was walked two times. He also had two home runs in the three games before the weekend.

Coyner attributes his hitting success to the adjustments Schrage had him make at the plate.

“I have been swinging a lot better,” he said. “Coach worked on a few things with me. I got a few breaks, and things are turning around for me. I am having a lot of confidence out there. I believe that I am going to get hits out there.”

Let’s play another one: The Huskies will play the last game in their seven-game homestand Thursday against Iowa.

First pitch will be at 3 p.m at Ralph McKenzie Field. The game originally was supposed to start at 1 p.m. but was moved.

The Huskies faced the Hawkeyes during spring break and lost 6-0.

“Iowa is going to be a big game for us,” Schrage said. “They beat us single-handedly the last time we played them. This is probably the best defensive team we are going to face. We will earn every hit that we are going to get tomorrow.”
