SA doles out near $39,000 excess
April 2, 2001
Eight student groups received additional funding Sunday, part of the Student Association’s continuing efforts to get rid of excess funds.
Almost $39,000 was approved for dispersal by the Student Senate, part of continuing efforts to supply supplemental funding to student organizations. Next week’s meeting should feature more supplemental approvals for other student organizations needing extra money as the fiscal year winds down. Approval for the extra funding, added to the normal budgets for student organizations approved each year, comes after the SA Finance Committee reviews requests and makes a recommendation to the senate.
Deputy treasurer Sonal Adhikari, the head of the SA Finance Committee, said the supplemental funds were given to groups that will do the most for the campus. Normally, those funds are used only for organizations with financial problems. But with the excess amount in the account this year, the qualifications were changed.
“This time, it’s for groups that say, ‘OK, we want to do more events,'” Adhikari said.
About $130,000 was requested by student groups for the last month of the year, but Adhikari estimates the committee only can give out about $65,000. Conflicting accountancy reports say as much as $80,000 could be in the account or as little as $65,000.
The cause of the problem still must be determined, contributing to the fluctuating reports. SA treasurer Troy Caldwell has said he needs to distribute the funds because too much money in general accounts could cause the state of Illinois to take back the unused money. Whether that would happen, though, is unclear.
The only questions asked by senators concerned how the committee came to its decision and the nature of On Point Entertainment’s receipt of more than $8,000. That group organizes social and educational gatherings on campus, Caldwell said.
