Stepping standouts land $500 prize
March 26, 2001
Dancers in Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority’s Delta Omicron chapter proved themselves Saturday, stepping forth victorious at the 26th annual Greek Scene step show competition.
Nearly 400 people from all over the Midwest gathered at the show, sponsored by the Zeta Nu chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha women won $500 for their step performance.
“We are happy to have the opportunity to represent the Alpha Kappa Alphas in the highest way,” said sorority member Nicole Trotter, a junior journalism major. “We host so many successful programs this and last semester. Being a part of Greek Scene was very exciting for us.”
The competition was open to two fraternities and two of three sororities of the Panhellenic Council, recognized by NIU. Sigma Gamma Rho’s seven step performers danced outside of the competition segment.
Members of Iota Phi Theta fraternity’s Beta Nu chapter were recognized as the only fraternity brothers to participate in the event. NIU alumnus Algenoy
Alexander, an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member, said NIU’s chapter was at a regional conference in Nebraska, not allowing it to participate in the show.
Saturday’s audience included not only NIU students and faculty, but also sorority and fraternity members from other chapters and graduate levels.
Craig “DJ Craig D” Dodgen, a sophomore marketing major at Kishwaukee Community College, said he appreciated the performances.
“This was different from the comedy shows and the parties,” said Dodgen, who deejays at many NIU events. “Because the students perform, the show is more interesting to watch and deejay for.”
LaVerne Gyant, Center for Black Studies director, showed her support.
“The show promotes community participation in Greek events and unity among the Greeks,” Gyant said.
Sigma Gamma Rho chapter president Angela Winston said this year’s event had sentimental value to her.
“It was very trying, but I knew it would be prosperous” said Winston, a senior elementary education major. “My sorors and I worked for five months to prepare this show. The time we have shared together … I will truly miss them.”
