Women’s tennis scratches over weekend

NIU’s women’s tennis team lost to all three of its non-conference opponents over the weekend at the Boise State Invitational.
On Friday, NIU lost to Boise State 7-0 and had to play without their No.2 player Karrie Tyioran, who was out because to sickness.
“It was definitely tough to compete without Karrie out there,” said NIU tennis coach Laura Scott.
Scott had to move her line-up around to make up for the loss of Tyioran. Because of the line-up change, Molly Opel and Kris Tiedt played first position doubles, and Kristi McIntyre and Ashley Brunk played together for the first time.
Scott said the team battled hard and did not give up, even though Boise was the strongest team they played all year.
On Saturday, NIU went against Northern Arizona, the first team the Huskies have played outside against this season. The inability to adapt to the desert weather resulted in a 6-1 loss for NIU.
“We came out and played flat tennis,” Scott said. “It started in doubles and carried over to singles play.”
The one win for the team came from Tanja Sukovic, who dominated her singles opponent 6-1, 6-0.
“She [Tanja] can be a very explosive tennis player,” Scott said.
NIU ended the three days with a 4-3 loss Sunday to the University of Idaho. Two NIU freshmen had victories in singles matches. Branka Savic had a three set win, and Kristi McIntyre defeated her opponent in two sets.
The Tiedt-Opel duo had an 8-4 victory over their Idaho opponents, as did Sukovic and Brunk.
“If we could have played this way the first two matches of the weekend, we easily could be 2-0 out here,” Scott said.
NIU will start Mid-American Conference play with a match against Marshall University on Friday.
