Bus routes change around road work
March 19, 2001
Instead of smoothing campus roads, street-patch work around the residence halls was delayed last week, forcing temporary bus-schedule alterations starting today.
Snow and rain filled torn-up roads during spring break, forcing Huskie Line officials to alter the Campus Circle routes and one stop on other routes to allow for continued construction.
Phoebe Hodges-Carter, Student Association transportation director, said buses will not stop in front of DuSable Hall, Stevenson Towers North, Grant Towers North or Lincoln Hall. She is scrambling to encourage students to instead stand on corners along a temporary circle route.
For the time being, students used to getting on and off near DuSable should stand at the corner of University Circle and Stadium Drive. Grant residents are encouraged to stand at the corner of Lincoln Drive North and Stadium Drive East near Lincoln Hall. Lincoln Hall residents can catch the buses just down the road next to Douglas Hall.
Stevenson residents can head either toward the Grant stop or walk down Stadium Drive West to the intersection at Stadium Drive South. Either way, Stevenson residents will walk nearly three blocks out of their way.
The eastern half of the Campus Circle routes will remain unchanged. Hodges-Carter said the routes still should take the same amount of time to complete, with the usual five minutes between bus arrivals at each stop.
Construction began last week as the first in a three-part plan to help rebuild deteriorating roads near the residence halls and on University Circle near DuSable Hall. The roads have broken down slowly since the arrival of Huskie Buses in the 1970s.
