Crash kills NIU student

An NIU student was killed and another driver arrested after a two-car accident Friday morning at Annie Glidden and Rich roads, north of DeKalb.

Julie A. Rader of Sycamore was traveling west on Rich Road in her 1990 Buick LeSabre when she allegedly ignored a stop sign about 8:06 a.m. and struck a car driven by 22-year-old accountancy major Brian N. Deets, who was southbound on Annie Glidden Road.

Deets’ 1993 Nissan Altima, hit on the driver’s side, was sent through the west ditch and crashed into a utility pole. Rader’s car came to rest in the south ditch.

Deets was pronounced dead at 8:45 a.m. An autopsy was performed Saturday by the DeKalb County coroner.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Deets was wearing his seatbelt, while Rader was not. Both had to be extricated from their vehicles by the DeKalb Fire Department and were transferred to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

Rader was treated and in fair condition as of Friday afternoon, said a hospital representative. She was released Saturday.

She was arrested and charged with disobeying a stop sign and driving without insurance.

Other charges could follow a sheriff’s department investigation.
