Service sorority to help fulfill children’s dreams

By Stacy Goldman

NIU’s service sorority is going to make some dreams come true.

Sigma Lambda Sigma and the Starlight Foundation of Chicago are sponsoring the first Study Break Auction.

The purpose of this auction is to raise enough money to send three terminally ill children to Walt Disney World this January. It will be held on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

Shay Pankau, vice president of Sigma Lambda Sigma, said, “We are a sorority that provides a variety of services to the community.”

She said included in these services are bake sales for local charities, work at the local homeless shelter and volunteer time at a local nursing home.

The Starlight Foundation is an organization that has chapters across the world which work to enhance the lives of more than 6,500 critically, chronically and terminally ill children each

week.

They also provide Starlight Express, which is an innovative program in children’s hospitals that includes state-of-the-art media rooms and mobile entertainment units.

Pankau said the Starlight Foundation enhances children’s lives by “granting last wishes, providing entertainment and recreational activities for pediatric patients.”

She said this is the first time the sorority is doing this and the emphasis of the Study Break Auction will be based on the activities and the profile of an escort.

To ensure this, the escort will not be shown until after their date package is sold to the highest bidder.

She said that all the individuals who are participating, as part of a date package, are all volunteers acquired throughout NIU.

“The escorts are men and women who go along with the date package,” she said. “We are not putting an impact on the person, but rather the package itself so that people participating do not have to have any reservations.”

The activities include dinner or an on-campus activity provided by local merchants such as Pizza Hut, The Junction and Pizza Villa.

The tickets for the auction cost $1 at the door.
