NIU dives into duals
January 24, 2001
After a month-long break from competition, the NIU men and women’s swimming and diving teams returned Saturday with mixed results against Eastern Michigan University and Ohio University.
The men defeated Ohio 169-64, while EMU upended the Huskies 174-69.
NIU and EMU split the four spots in the 200-yard medley relay. NIU’s Dario Fuentes won the 50-yard freestyle, Mick Coyne won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-meter freestyle relay team took first place.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Peter Cabo’s first-place win was taken away after the EMU coach questioned results, leading to the meet official changing the heat results. The Eagles’ David Marine ended up the winner of the heat, and NIU coach Anne Marie Stricklin is protesting the decision.
NIU women’s swimming may have lost to both EMU (77-166) and Ohio (173-70), but its members still placed in the top third in some events. Ann Schmitt took second place in the 1650-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
Meanwhile, two swimmers took third in their respective events: Kelly Amundson in the 100-yard freestyle and Abby Presley in the 200-yard backstroke.
The teams will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for a dual meet against the University of Toledo and the University at Buffalo at 1 p.m. Saturday.
