NIU ends home slate in perfect fashion
November 9, 1992
OME: 10-0.
That is what the press guides and game programs will say about the 1992 NIU volleyball team as it completed the home portion of this season’s slate unblemished. NIU has not lost a home match since last Nov. 1 at the hands of Illinois State.
The Huskies extended their Mid-Continent Conference winning streak to 12 matches by extinguishing the Illinois-Chicago Flames in three sets on Friday night and sweeping the Valparaiso Lady Crusaders in three sets on Saturday night.
The wins put the Huskies in the driver’s seat of the Mid-Continent Conference. They are 12-0 in conference play and 23-5 overall. With four matches remaining, NIU has almost assured itself of playing host to the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament on Nov. 28, 29 and 30.
On Friday, NIU poured water on the Flames in the first game taking it by a count of 15-3. The Huskies struggled a little in games two and three but regained their composure and took the games and the match, 15-13 and 15-10, much to the delight of the impressive crowd of almost 600. Head coach Pete Waite summed up his feelings on the match.
“Last night (Friday) we were kind of flat,” he said. “We were coming off the long weekend in California and the girls were getting back to their studies. I think we were down physically and mentally and that says a lot for our team when we can win even when things aren’t perfect.”
Individually, the Huskies were led by Kori Schauer and Becky Ramsey. Schauer pounded the Flames with 15 kills in 22 attempts against no errors. Ramsey slammed 11 kills in 22 attempts against one error.
Defensively, Nikki Kozak came up with 15 digs and Amy Vander Meer added 11.
On Saturday, the Huskies again had the presence of almost 600 in attendance when they took it to Valparaiso in straight-set scores of 15-6, 15-7, 15-6. The team improved over Friday’s performance in attack percentage from .228 to .301.
Individually, the Huskies were led by Wendy Mason, who netted 12 kills in 22 attempts against three errors.
NIU hits the road this week with a Friday night match at Cleveland State and a Saturday matinee at Youngstown State.
